DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY – JANUARY 15, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy (FE) announced plans to make $160 million in federal funding available to help recalibrate the Nation’s vast fossil-fuel and power infrastructure for decarbonized energy and commodity production. The funding, for cost-shared cooperative agreements, is aimed to develop technologies for the production, transport, storage, and utilization of fossil-based hydrogen, with progress towards net-zero carbon emissions. First Report Outlines Four Phases of Utility-Scale Energy Storage Deployment, Providing a Potential Roadmap to 100+ Gigawatts of Installed Capacity in the United States
Jan. 26, 2021

With declining costs, improved technologies, and increasing deployment, energy storage is poised to become a growing part of the evolving U.S. power system. But measuring the value of energy storage is inherently complex—and future systems will likely include multiple storage technologies, adding new complexity. Read more

Soon, your home may be able to generate solar power from places other than your roof. As the solar market evolves and expands, companies are looking into new solar technologies aimed at spreading solar energy generation beyond traditional rooftop and ground-mount solar panels. One such idea, solar panel windows, has gained momentum recently, and could represent part of the solar market’s future. Read more

“This year will likely be remembered as a period of technology consolidation rather than breakthrough innovation in the energy industry. Emerging industries such as offshore wind and lithium-ion battery storage have gone from strength to strength.

Meanwhile, more novel technologies such as energy blockchains and flow batteries have been relatively quiet this year. Read more

A possible breakout moment for emerging technologies like storage and hydrogen

Both energy storage and hydrogen – critical emerging technologies for unlocking emissions reductions across energy systems – could become key beneficiaries of stimulus plans, much as solar PV and wind benefitted from boosts during recovery packages after the 2008 financial crisis. Read more

Power electronics have taken an interesting turn toward the adoption of wide bandgap (WBG) devices such as GaN and SiC. While silicon still dominates the market, the emergence of GaN and SiC devices will soon direct technology toward new, more efficient solutions. Yole Développement (Yole) estimates that revenue from SiC devices will account for more than 10% of the market by 2025, while revenue from GaN devices will be more than 2% of the market by 2025.
