Texas Tech University and Group NIRE Pair Solar Energy with Battery Storage
LUBBOCK, TX (May 9, 2017) – The Global Laboratory for Energy Asset Management and Manufacturing (GLEAMM) has deployed a solar array at the Reese Technology Center to help students understand the relationship between solar energy and battery storage.
“Understanding this relationship will prepare students for the workforce as the electric grid becomes increasingly modernized,” Group NIRE CEO Mark Harral said.
The combination of solar energy and energy storage can smooth out grid fluctuations and provide the foundation for demand response. As part of a project funded by the State of Texas, this 150kW solar array will be paired with a 50kW/400kWh Iron Flow Battery energy storage system.
GLEAMM is an ongoing collaboration between Group NIRE and Texas Tech University representatives focused on protecting, enhancing and managing energy transmission and distribution on the electric grid.
